KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Population Registration Directorate (PRD) has signed an agreement with the Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) on distributing identity cards to all eligible voters in a specific period of time.

The agreement was signed during a meeting between Wasima Badghisi, operational deputy head of IEC and Humayun Mohtat, director of PRD, on Sunday.

The officials agreed the PRD would issue ID cards to all citizens eligible to vote, and the IEC would prepare a voter list based on the documents.

The IEC said the first document certifying the citizenship of people was ID card. The commission decided to make available the list of eligible voters to polling stations on the basis of this document and in accordance with Article 72 of the election law.

In a statement, the IEC said it had signed a number of agreements with the relevant departments in line with Article 9 of the electoral law to ensure transparent and timely elections.
