HERAT (Pajhwok): A number of visually impaired students in western Herat province say the government is paying them no attention to have proper facilities and equipment for educationinfo-icon.

The special children made the complaint at a ceremony marking the White Cane Safety Day (blind people day) in Herat city, the provincial capital.

Ali Haqjo, a student at the school for blind in Herat, said: “Unfortunately, blind people are neglected by the government in terms of facilities.”

Rokhshana Mohammad, a young visually impaired girl, who participated in the gathering, also expressed her concern over the shortage of special facilities for blind people.

“The blind don’t have education facilities, no Braille embosser (a printer for visually impaired writing system) and they suffer from joblessness.”

Ahmad Tahir Forotan, the blind school principal, said the concerns of blind students were just and should be addressed. “We even have no Braille printer to resolve our problems and blind people are always denied jobs.”

Abdul Raziq Ahmadi, the Herat education director, said his department was making efforts to meet the needs of blind students.

About the Braille printer, he said: “We, at the education department, have a Braille printer and we will make efforts at activating it and will hand it over to them.”

According to local officials, currently 150 blind individuals are studying at the Herat Blind School.
