Oct 03, 2017 - 18:49

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon member Mirwais Yasini on Tuesday said corruption and insecurity had reached the peak in eastern Nangarhar province, with illegal armed individuals increasing day by day.

Flanked by another lawmaker Faridon Momand, Yasini told reporters at the Provincial Council (PC) office here that the Presidential Palace should send a delegation led by the Supreme Court for addressing the mentioned issues in Nangarhar.

Nangarhar PC head Ahmad Ali Hazrat and member Nasir Kamawal were also present at the press conference in Jalalabad, the provincial capital.

Yasini first expressed his concern about the deteriorated security situation in Nangarhar and claimed corruption at reached the peak at revenue departments.

He said the number of illegal gunmen had reached thousands in Nangarhar where he alleged government appointments were made based on connections.

The lawmaker named no one but said some national assembly members and powerful families were involved in the mess.

Yasini said resolving the mentioned problems in Nangarhar was not an easy task and only a Supreme Court-led delegation could resolve them.

(The apex court-led delegation should be comprised of representatives from the ministries of interior, defense and the National Directorate of Security.”

He said the proposed delegation should grill all provincial officials, members of parliament and strongmen and return to the president for a decision.

Meanwhile, Nangarhar police chief Brig. Gen. Abdul Rahman Rahimi said police worked day and night to maintain security. He said the security situation had not deteriorated to the level as claimed by some circles.

“We weekly share our performance report with the media. We respect their views about security but one should not declare all our efforts as zero.”

People started raising their voices against increasing insecurity after some traders were robbed and family members of others were kidnapped.
