Janikhel district changes hands -- yet again

Janikhel district changes hands -- yet again

Aug 10, 2017 - 13:12

GARDEZ (Pajhwok): The Janikhel district of southeastern Paktia province has fallen to Talibaninfo-icon for a third time, officials confirmed on Thursday.

The district fell to the militants last month, but was recaptured two weeks ago by the security forces after heavy clashes.

On Wednesday, the Taliban claimed overrunning the restive district and inflicting heavy casualties on the security personnel.

Police spokesman Sardar Wali Tabassum told Pajhwok Afghan News the security forces had tactically withdrawn to prevent civilian casualties.

He said the security personnel had gone to the district with equipment to construct buildings and settlements, but the militants staged attacks on them.

He added the security forces were still fighting against the insurgents. However, he did not say anything about casualties.

A member of provincial council, Taj Mohammad Mangal, hit out at the security forces for retreating to Rashidgi Kando area. He said no progress was possible in the absence of air support.
