Batikot district set to produce kinnow this season

Batikot district set to produce kinnow this season

Jul 16, 2017 - 11:49

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Agriculture officials in eastern Nangarhar province have predicted a 10 percent surge in kinnow production this year.

Kinnow farms have been established over 1,500 acres of land of the canalisation department, which is set to produce quality fruit this year.

Eng. Ghulam Hazrat Abdul Rahimzai, head of the canalisation department, told Pajhwok Afghan News that after years they again got kinnow farms on hundreds of acres of land.

Last year, up to 100 tonnes of fruits were harvested from these farms and dispatched to Jalalabad. This year they expect higher production of about 1,000 tonnes.

He said the government paid attention to the rehabilitation of orchards on its lands and another 90 acres of land was being cultivated with fruit trees.

The kinnow farms have been leased out to the private sector and the important point is that the government has paid nothing for the protection and cultivation of the land. He recalled they had collected 42 million afghanis in revenue from the farms.

The district chief, Niamatullah Noorzai, hoped the kinnow farms would help generate work opportunities for resident of Batikot and Ghanikehel.

He said residents of the locality were happy to see the development of orchards and wanted the fruit to be dispatched to other parts of the country.

He added Batikot people produced and sold watermelon and melon in the summer and would be happy to sell kinnow in the winter season.
