World Bank-funded greenhouses inaugurated in Uruzgan

TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Eight recently-built greenhouses have been inaugurated in central Uruzgan province, an official said on Saturday.

Governor Mohammad Nazir Kharoti, at the inauguration ceremony, told Pajhwok Afghan News the facilities had been built in different areas of the provincial capital.

He said the construction of the greenhouses had cost 29 million afghanis paid by the Worldinfo-icon Bank. Uruzgan’s residents are mostly reliant on farming and projects would help boost their income

The governor hoped local market would be provided with local products.

Agricultureinfo-icon and Livestock Director Eng. Zalmai Aloko said the eight greenhouses had been built on 2,850 square metres of land.

He said each greenhouse would be capable of producing 68 tonnes of cucumber, 56 tonnes of tomato, 40 tonnes of lettuce and 36 tonnes of eggplant every year.

Aloko said work on the construction of 28 more greenhouses was underway and they would be completed in near future. Currently 38 greenhouses are functional in Uruzgan.

Haji Habibullah, a farmer from Uruzgan, told Pajhwok vegetables were grown in the greenhouses in every season of the year that helped improve their income.
