May 24, 2017 - 12:54

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): NATOinfo-icon was closely following its commitment to eliminate the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria-Khorasan (ISIS-K) or Daesh in Afghanistaninfo-icon, a top US Navy general said on Wednesday.

In an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, Capt. William Salvin said the alliance was aware of the threat posed by the Talibaninfo-icon. Efforts were focused on northern Kunduz province, where the rebels were more active, he added.

Asked about the current security situation in the country, he said the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces (ANDSF) led security effort. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) was in a better position to explain the situation, he believed.

Salvin said ANDSF were better prepared for this year’s fighting season. However, he stopped short of saying anything about the future situation.

With regard to future threats from Daesh and the Taliban, the NATO official said they firmly stood by their Afghan partners and supported their efforts to prevent the loss of control to the enemy.

MoD spokesman Maj. Gen. Dawlat Waziri, meanwhile, said 23 separate military operations were underway in 17 different provinces of the country.

He added militant attacks were being countered effectively throughout. In 2015 and 2016, the rebels tried to increase stepped up their activities but their plans were foiled by the security forces.
