‘Paktika security men involved in drug smuggling’

SHARANA (Pajhwok): The appellate court in southeastern Paktika province on Sunday accused some officials of their involvement in drug smuggling, saying a number of other officials had been prosecuted on the same charge.

The appellate court head, Asadullah Waziri, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Paktika produced zero poppy but was home to a large number of drug addicts.

He said they had received a dozen drug smuggling related cases with the help of intelligence officers over the past one month and the perpetrators had been prosecuted.

“People can report about individuals involved in drug business to the attorney offices, it will help rescue the societyinfo-icon from the dangerous phenomenon,” Waziri added.

He said a number of security officers had also been arrested over drug smuggling charges in Paktika.

He said the attorney’s office branches were active in most districts of the province and people could easily share their problems with the relevant officers.

Roman, a resident of Argun district, said most of the times security men were involved in drug smuggling, selling and purchasing.

“Police can ban narcotics in a week if they really want so, but they do not want it,” he believed.

He said the government should have a strong will for eradication of narcotics to control the increasing population of addicts.

Mujahid, a resident of Sharana, the provincial capital, said people, particularly youth, were addicted to drugs due to joblessness.

He asked the government to create jobs for the youth and sack police officials who were involved in drug smuggling or addicted to narcotics.

Besides men, womeninfo-icon have also started smoking drugs in Paktika province in recent years.
