Paktika wells run dry as underground water depletes

SHARANA (Pajhwok): Water wells in many areas of southeastern Paktika province have run dry due to what residents believe the abundance of solar-powered water pumps for irrigation.

A resident of Argun district, Roman, told Pajhwok Afghan News that many people had installed solar-powered water pumps to irrigate their farmland.

“Due to the overpumping, the groundwater level has depleted in many areas and has created shortage of drinking water,” he said.

Similarly, a resident Sharana, the provincial capital, Syed Mohammad, said the underground water level had recently depleted in the province.

“Previously people would use water of canal and karezinfo-icon for irrigation but now machines are used.”

A civil societyinfo-icon activist, Mohammadullah, said the government should resolve the irrigation water issue in order farmers avoided using water pumps.

He suggested the government should construct small dams in villages for irrigation purposes.

Paktika governor Ilyas Wihdat also said the use of solar powered water pumps had resulted in depletion of the underground water in the province.

However, he said they had launched work on a plan to resolve the issue and were trying to find an alternative.
