21 dead, 33 injured as Kandahar battle goes on

Mar 06, 2017 - 18:31

KADNAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Half a dozen policemen and 15 militants have been killed during an ongoing clash that erupted last night in Nish district of southern Kandahar province, officials said Monday.

Provincial police spokesman, Zia Durrani, told Pajhwok Afghan News the clash began on Sunday night and was still ongoing.

The militants stormed a number of security posts but they were pushed back after Afghan forces received reinforcements in the area, he said.

Durrani said so far 15 militants had been killed and 20 others wounded in the firefight that also left six police dead and 13 others injured.

The Talibaninfo-icon claimed capturing many security posts and inflicting heavy casualties on police in Nish district.

Their spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, said the fighters captured 10 security posts, killed 19 police and captured 25 alive.

He said 12 other policemen surrendered to the Taliban during the fight. The fighters had besieged the district building and the police headquarters and clashes were ongoing, Ahmadi said.

However, local security officials rejected the Taliban claims and said the Afghan forces putting up strong resistance did not let the Taliban capture any area.

Some officials, who declined to be named, said the Taliban staged the attack in Nish district after they were joined by comrades from other districts and Uruzgan and Helmand provinces.

The roads between Kandahar City and Khakrez and Shah Walikot districts were closed due to the clash in Nish district. Both the sides are said to suffered heavy casualties.

A month back, a clash between militants and police left 12 policemen dead and eight others wounded. Thirty seven militants were also killed during airstrikes.

Local residents have accused the militants of killing 23 civilians during their attacks.
