Kunduz farmers blast govt over lack of facilities

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Farmers and handicraft producers on Monday complained about a lack of green houses, cold storage facilities, irrigation water and market for handicrafts during an exhibition in northern Kunduz province.

Farmers and womeninfo-icon put on display their agricultural and handicraft products at the exhibition marking the National Farmer Day in Kunduz City, the provincial capital.

Khair Mohammad, a farmer from Chardara district, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “After 10 years, we are celebrating the National Farmer Day with zeal and enthusiasm.”

He said organizing such events provided a platform to farmers to inform the authorities concerned about their problems.

But he complained due to the lack of cold storages, they their agricultureinfo-icon products were sold at low prices. If these facilities were made available, farmers would benefit a lot and would be able to sell their products for reasonable prices, he added.

Governor Asadullah Omarkhel pledged to resolve problems farmers and craftswomen faced in the province through his upcoming work action plan.

He said his future strategy would be more focused on security. He claimed seeking the central government’s help in making Kunduz a peaceful province before taking charge as the governor.

It is worth mentioning that the Afghan government has declared the second day of new solar yearinfo-icon as National Farmer Day being observed as a public holiday.
