American woman funds school building in Balkh

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok):  Financed by an American woman, a newly-constructed building for a girls’ high school was inaugurated on Tuesday in the capital of northern Balkh province.

Balkh educationinfo-icon director Azizullah Aziz told Pajhwok Afghan News the building for Gohar Shad Begum High School was constructed with financial support from an American woman named “Janet” at a cost of $800,000.

The structure has 24 classrooms, one computer room, boundary wall, water supply system, 10 toilets and a playground. Benches and desks for students have also been provided.

The school principal, Nafisa Ghayasi, told Pajhwok Afghan News earlier teachers and students had to face many problems in performing their tasks.

She said the school education environmentinfo-icon had been unsatisfactory because 2000 students had to study in 10 rooms in four shifts.

Now students could attend classes in two shifts in the new building which has the capacity to accommodate 2300 students.

The education director said the most serious problem was the lack of buildings for schools. He said 130 of 600 schools in Balkh had buildings.
